Billing rules: Understanding days/nights after death
Last updated: April 14, 2026
Overview
When a resident passes away, Found can continue to generate invoices for a configurable number of days or night beyond the date of death. This allows care homes to account for end-of-life administrative processes, notice periods, and final billing obligations.
The days/nights after death setting is part of the billing rules on a billing contract template. When a booking is closed with the reason "Deceased", Found can automatically extends the billing subscription by the configured number of days or nights, ensuring that final invoices are raised correctly before the billing period closes.
This setting works alongside the days/nights after move out rule, which applies to all other booking closure reasons (such as transfer or completed stay).
How it works
A billing contract template is created with billing rules configured, including the number of days or nights after death to invoice.
When a booking is ended and the closure reason is set to Deceased, Found will calculate the subscription end date by adding the configured number of days or nights to the closure date.
Invoices continue to be generated up to that extended end date.
If the value is set to zero, billing stops on the date of death with no extension.
Where to configure it
The days/nights after death value is set during the billing rules step when creating or editing a billing contract template. The field label reads:
"How many days/nights after death should be invoiced?"
The field accepts any non-negative whole number (0 or above).
Frequently asked questions
Q: What does "days/ nights after death" mean in Found?
A: It is the number of days/nights Found will continue to generate invoices after a resident passes away. The billing subscription end date is automatically extended by this number of days or nights from the recorded date of death.
Q: Where do I set this value?
A: It is configured in the billing rules section of a billing contract template. You will see the field during contract creation or when editing billing rules on an existing contract.
Q: What happens if I set the value to zero?
A: Billing stops on the date of death. No additional days/nights are invoiced after the closure date.
Q: What closure reason triggers the days after death rule?
A: Only the Deceased closure reason triggers this rule. All other closure reasons (such as transfer or completed stay) use the separate days/nights after move out value instead.
Q: What happens if the field is left blank?
A: If no value is configured, Found defaults to zero days/nights, meaning billing ends on the date of death.
Q: Can I set different values for death and move out?
A: Yes. The days/nights after death and days/nights after move out are two separate fields. You can configure different values for each to reflect your home's billing policy for different closure scenarios.
